1) What age range is the Wriggly Readers Club suitable for?
The activities in the Wriggly Readers Club are designed for children between the ages of 4 – 5 years old who are in Foundation Stage. However, it is important to remember that all children have different rates of development so it depends on their individual reading ability. There’s nothing stopping an eager 3 year old joining in the fun to prepare them for their first year at school! Alternatively, a 6 year old child would benefit too if they need more practise with their reading in Year 1.
2) Will this work for my child?
It’s proven that children learn best when they are engaged and enjoying what they are doing. Each month, the activities provide lots of fun ways to read which have all been tried and tested in real classrooms with children. We know that children at this age can have short attention spans when it comes to sitting down with a book, so we’ve made reading much more active and accessible for them. They will be having so much fun playing that they won’t even realise they’re learning to read!
3) Is Wriggly Readers qualified to provide this kind of help?
Yes! All the activities are thoughtfully planned by Hannah Angrave who is a fully qualified teacher with a 3 Year BA (Hons) degree in Primary Education. She has over 10 years experience of working in schools and is consistently graded as ‘Outstanding’ by Oftsted. She is currently teaching 4 – 5 year olds in a Foundation Stage class, so she has an in-depth knowledge of how Phonics is used to teach reading skills in the Early Years. All her resources have been tried and tested to give you exceptional results in your child’s overall progress and enjoyment of reading.
4) Do the activities cater for more advanced readers?
Absolutely! Hannah is exceptional at teaching lessons which cater for all different levels of ability and she has taken the same amount of time and dedication to plan the activities inside each Wriggly Reader’s Club box, too. There are 3 levels for you to choose from, ranging from beginners to advanced, which means that you can pick the level that is right for your child.
5) How will I know which level is right for my child?
Usually, if your child is in Nursery or just starting school at the age of 4, they will need to begin at Level 1 which is aimed at beginners. You might want to stick at this level for the first few months to build up their confidence and make sure that they are 100% secure before tackling the advanced levels. Just to make sure you’ve chosen the right level for your child, members will receive an easy to understand Quick Start Guide which will give you lots of advice and examples to get you started. The amazing thing about the Wriggly Readers Club is that you can go back to your favourite theme and try the next level up when your child is ready for a challenge with harder words and sentences to read.
Your child doesn’t just have to join the Wriggly Reader’s club at the beginning of the year, they can join at anytime! If they are already a more advanced reader in Foundation Stage, I would recommend trying Level 1 and 2 first as it is important to get the basics right without seeing it as a race to rush to Level 3.
6) Do I need to assess my child?
Your child won’t require a formal assessment in order to benefit from the monthly packs, however we do advise that you take an active interest in how your child is progressing. We will provide you will useful hints to ensure that you are supporting and challenging your child accordingly. We are always here to respond to any emails with questions and queries you might have about your child’s reading too. We are more than happy to help!
6) How many times can I play the activities?
You can enjoy playing the activities over and over again, often with multiple players making it perfect for friends and family to join in. Each month will have a new and exciting theme and the words to read will always be different, so there’s always something to look forward to!
The box packaging is made out of durable plastic which is specifically designed to be long lasting and easy to store for future use.
7) Are these activities suitable for homeschooling?
The Wriggly Readers Club is designed as a supplement to what your child will be learning, either at school or through homeschooling, enabling them to revise the new skills they have learnt in their Phonics lessons. We understand that children learn best through repetition and in new and creative ways, so the more reading they do inside and outside of school, the better!
8) Are these activities suitable for teachers to use in school?
Definitely, Hannah Angrave has successfully used the reading activities with small groups in schools and the children absolutely loved them! The games are perfect to use during phonics lessons, guided reading or even as an independent activity in the book corner of a classroom. The 3 different levels mean that they can benefit children working in Phase 2, 3 and 4 phonics so there’s something for everyone.
9) Are the activities based on the current curriculum?
Yes! Hannah has an accurate, up to date knowledge of the statutory curriculum for reading and writing in the Early Years and Key Stage One. We revise the resources and learning material each year to ensure that the activities are always in line with the current publications released by the Department for Education.
10) Do I need any teaching knowledge to benefit from these activities?
The Wriggly Readers Club has been carefully created especially for parents and carers, where all the activities are easy to follow and understand, so that the main focus can be on you sharing wonderful memories with your child as a family. Let us worry about planning what to do, so that you don’t have to.
